Doomguard

by papaganoush (7) on April 21st, 2007

Doomguard is the most powerful warlock pet in the game so far. With a 7 resource cost it is a late game play but only three allies have a higher attack (High Overlord Saurfang, Ivus the Forest Lord, Lokholar the Ice Lord) without including the allies like Tewa that could have a higher attack. With 8 Health only 2 allies (Ivus the Forest Lord, Lokholar the Ice Lord) have a higher health.

The scary part of playing a Doomguard is the payment effect. When Doomguard enters play you randomly select a friendly hero or ally and that ally is destroyed. If your hero is selected you lose the game. Once he is added to your party he will be a game changing influence. At then end of each of your turns you destroy a target opposing ally, and coupled with the strength of the Doomguard you are likely looking at a 3 for 1 exchange in your favor.

With an auto lose condition I don't think the Doomguard will see competitive play without some sort of protection for your hero. There are several options to protect your hero like Valthak Spiritdrinker, Queen Sylvanas Windrunner, and Ring of the Unliving but all of these can be destroyed by your opponent during the play of Doomguard. In casual play I think Doomguard will see some play, especially in slow developing control decks.
